The story that takes place in the city of Jericho, where Jesus is passing through on his way to Jerusalem.

The central figure of the story, a teacher and healer who has been attracting large crowds with his teachings and miracles. A wealthy tax collector, known for his short stature and his unpopularity among the people due to his profession.

Zacchaeus has heard about Jesus and is eager to see him. However, because he is short and the crowd is large, he cannot see over the people.

Determined to catch a glimpse of Jesus, Zacchaeus runs ahead of the crowd and climbs a sycamore tree. This allows him to see Jesus as he passes by.

As Jesus approaches the spot where Zacchaeus is perched, he looks up and calls him by name, saying, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.”

Overjoyed, Zacchaeus quickly climbs down from the tree and welcomes Jesus gladly. This action surprises the crowd, as tax collectors were generally despised and considered sinners.

The crowd begins to murmur among themselves, expressing their disapproval of Jesus choosing to associate with a known sinner. They say, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”

Moved by Jesus’ acceptance and the chance to host him, Zacchaeus stands up and makes a public declaration. He vows to give half of his possessions to the poor and promises to repay anyone he has cheated four times the amount he took.

Jesus responds to Zacchaeus’ repentance and generosity by saying, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

The story of Zacchaeus highlights Jesus’ mission to seek and save those who are lost. Zacchaeus’ transformation from a greedy tax collector to a generous and repentant man illustrates the power of Jesus’ acceptance and love.

By choosing to stay at Zacchaeus’ house, Jesus demonstrates that no one is beyond redemption and that God’s love extends to all, regardless of their past actions or social standing.
