The story of the last supper – आखिरी भोज की कहानी

The story of the Last Supper is a pivotal moment in the New Testament, marking the final meal Jesus shared with His disciples before His crucifixion.

The Last Supper took place on the evening before Jesus’ crucifixion, during the Jewish festival of Passover. It is described in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. This meal was held in an upper room in Jerusalem, where Jesus and His twelve disciples gathered.

Jesus had instructed His disciples to prepare a place for the Passover meal. They followed His directions and found a large, furnished room, where they made arrangements for the supper (Luke 22:8-13).

As described earlier, during the meal, Jesus performed the humble act of washing His disciples’ feet. This act symbolized His teaching about servanthood and humility (John 13:1-17).

At the meal, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and distributed it to His disciples, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19). He then took a cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood” (Luke 22:20). This was a significant moment where Jesus established what is now known as the Eucharist or Holy Communion.

During the meal, Jesus revealed that one of the disciples would betray Him. This revelation caused distress among the disciples, each asking if they were the one who would betray Him. Jesus identified Judas Iscariot as the one who would betray Him for thirty pieces of silver (Matthew 26:20-25; John 13:21-27).

Jesus also gave His disciples a new commandment: “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (John 13:34). This commandment emphasized the importance of love and unity among His followers.

After the meal, Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. He experienced deep anguish as He prayed to God the Father, asking if the cup of suffering could be taken from Him but ultimately submitting to God’s will (Matthew 26:36-46; Mark 14:32-42; Luke 22:39-46).

The Last Supper is central to Christian worship, where the act of breaking bread and sharing the cup symbolizes Jesus’ sacrifice and is remembered through the sacrament of Communion.

Jesus’ actions, including washing His disciples’ feet, demonstrate the essence of Christian leadership and servanthood.

The revelation of Judas’ betrayal sets the stage for the events leading to Jesus’ crucifixion, highlighting the themes of sacrifice and redemption.

Jesus’ new commandment to love one another underscores the importance of love and compassion in the Christian faith.

The Last Supper remains a foundational event in Christianity, commemorated during the celebration of the Eucharist and serving as a profound lesson in humility, love, and the sacrificial nature of Jesus’ mission.
