The story of the ark among the philistines – पलिश्तियों के बीच सन्दूक की कहानी
The story of “The Ark Among the Philistines” is recounted in the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel, specifically in chapters 4 through 6. The Israelites are engaged in conflict with the Philistines, a neighboring people. During a battle, the Israelites decide to bring the Ark of the Covenant, which symbolizes the presence of God, into the battlefield, believing it will ensure their victory.
Despite bringing the Ark into battle, the Israelites are defeated by the Philistines, and the Ark is captured by them. The two sons of the high priest Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, are killed in the battle. When Eli, who was elderly and blind, hears the news of the capture of the Ark and the death of his sons, he falls over backward, breaks his neck, and dies.
The Philistines take the Ark to the city of Ashdod and place it in the temple of their god, Dagon. The next morning, they find that the statue of Dagon has fallen face-down before the Ark. They set the statue upright, but the following morning, they find it not only fallen again but also broken, with only the torso remaining.
After witnessing these events, the Philistines begin to experience plagues and calamities in the city of Ashdod, affecting the people with tumors. They then move the Ark to the cities of Gath and Ekron, but wherever it goes, the same plagues afflict the Philistines.
Realizing that the presence of the Ark is causing them harm, the Philistine rulers decide to return it to the Israelites. They consult their priests and come up with a plan to test whether the plagues were a coincidence or truly caused by the presence of the Ark.
The Philistines construct a cart and place the Ark on it along with offerings of gold as a guilt offering. They then hitch two cows to the cart and set them on the road toward Israel. If the cows lead the cart back to Israelite territory, it would confirm that the plagues were indeed caused by the Ark.
The cows, without any guidance, head straight for Beth-shemesh, an Israelite town. The people of Beth-shemesh rejoice at the return of the Ark, but some are struck dead for looking into the Ark, an act forbidden by God.
The story of “The Ark Among the Philistines” illustrates the reverence and power associated with the Ark of the Covenant, as well as the consequences of mishandling or disrespecting it. It also highlights God’s sovereignty and His ability to demonstrate His presence and power among both the Israelites and their enemies.
