Samuel insisted on seeing David, and when David was brought before him, the Lord said to Samuel, “Rise and anoint him; he is the one.” Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed David in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on, the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David.
Following the anointing, David returned to his sheep, and Samuel returned to Ramah. Meanwhile, the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit tormented him. David’s anointing marked the beginning of his journey toward kingship, although it would be many years before he would ascend the throne.
David’s anointing symbolized God’s choice and approval of him as the future king of Israel, despite his humble beginnings as a shepherd.
The anointing of David demonstrates God’s sovereignty in choosing leaders and His ability to raise up individuals from unexpected places to fulfill His purposes.
