The story of stephen martyrdom – स्टीफन की शहादत की कहानी

The story of Stephen’s martyrdom is found in the New Testament book of Acts, specifically in Acts 6:8–7:60:

Stephen was one of the seven men chosen to serve the early Christian community in Jerusalem. He was described as a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and he performed great wonders and signs among the people. However, some members of the local synagogue began to argue with Stephen, but they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he spoke. These opponents stirred up the people and brought false charges against Stephen, accusing him of blasphemy against Moses and God.

Stephen was brought before the Sanhedrin, the Jewish council, to defend himself against the accusations. Instead of defending himself, Stephen delivered a lengthy speech recounting the history of Israel, from Abraham to Moses to David, highlighting God’s faithfulness and the people’s repeated disobedience. He accused his accusers of resisting the Holy Spirit, just as their ancestors had done.

As Stephen spoke, he saw a vision of heaven opened, with Jesus standing at the right hand of God. He declared this vision to the council, stating that he saw the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.

The members of the council were enraged by Stephen’s words and dragged him out of the city to stone him. As they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Then he fell to his knees and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” After saying this, he died.

Stephen’s martyrdom marked the beginning of a great persecution against the early Church in Jerusalem. However, his death also had a profound impact on Saul of Tarsus, who later became the apostle Paul. Stephen’s courageous witness to the truth of the gospel, even in the face of death, serves as an inspiration for believers throughout history to stand firm in their faith and to boldly proclaim the message of Jesus Christ.
