The story of simon and the priesthood – साइमन और पुरोहिती की कहानी
The story of Simon and the priesthood is found in the New Testament, specifically in the Book of Acts, chapter 8:
Simon, also known as Simon the Sorcerer or Simon Magus, was a Samaritan magician who practiced sorcery and amazed many people with his magical abilities. He had gained a following among the Samaritans and was regarded as a great power, even being called “the Great Power of God.”
When Philip the Evangelist went to Samaria to preach the gospel, he performed miraculous signs, including healing the sick and driving out evil spirits. Many Samaritans believed in Jesus and were baptized, including Simon himself. He was astonished by the signs and miracles performed by Philip and became a follower of Philip and the teachings of Jesus.
After witnessing the apostles laying their hands on the new believers to receive the Holy Spirit, Simon was impressed and desired to possess this power for himself. He offered money to Peter and John, saying, “Give me also this power so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”
Peter rebuked Simon sharply, saying, “May your money perish with you because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! You have no part or share in this ministry because your heart is not right before God.” Peter discerned that Simon’s request stemmed from a selfish desire for power and prestige rather than genuine faith and repentance.
Realizing the seriousness of his error, Simon asked Peter to pray for him, acknowledging his sin and expressing fear of the consequences. Peter urged him to repent of his wickedness and pray for forgiveness, warning him of the danger of perishing in his sin.
The story of Simon and the priesthood serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of seeking spiritual gifts for selfish reasons and highlights the importance of genuine repentance and humility before God. It underscores the truth that true faith cannot be bought or manipulated but is a gift of God’s grace received through genuine repentance and submission to His will.
