The story of saul and the witch of endor – शाऊल और एंडोर की चुड़ैल की कहानी

The story of Saul and the Witch of Endor is a biblical narrative found in the First Book of Samuel, specifically in 1 Samuel 28:3-25. It is a significant episode in the life of King Saul, who was the first king of Israel.

Saul, the king of Israel, found himself in a dire situation. The Philistine army had gathered for war against Israel, and Saul was anxious and desperate. He sought guidance from God, but God did not answer him, either through dreams, prophets, or the Urim (a method of seeking divine guidance).

Earlier in his reign, Saul had banned all forms of witchcraft and divination in Israel, in accordance with the Mosaic Law (Leviticus 19:31; 20:6). However, in his desperation, he decided to seek help from a medium or witch, which was a practice he had previously condemned.

Saul disguised himself and went to the town of Endor in the territory of the Philistines. There, he sought the services of a medium, often referred to as the “Witch of Endor.” Saul asked her to conjure up the spirit of the prophet Samuel, who had already died, so that he could seek advice and guidance.

The medium followed Saul’s request and, to her astonishment, an apparition resembling Samuel appeared before her. She cried out in fear when she saw the figure of Samuel, recognizing that it was Saul who had come to her.

Samuel’s spirit delivered a message to Saul. He told Saul that God had turned away from him and his kingdom because of his disobedience and unfaithfulness. Samuel prophesied that Saul and his sons would die in battle the next day, which indeed came to pass.

Saul was deeply distressed upon hearing this prophecy. He fell to the ground, weakened by fasting and fear. The medium tried to comfort him and urged him to eat, but he refused.

As predicted, Saul and his sons were killed in battle against the Philistines the following day.

The story of Saul and the Witch of Endor is often cited as an example of seeking forbidden means of divination and the consequences of turning away from God’s guidance. It is also a poignant account of Saul’s tragic end as king of Israel.
