The story of Pilate judging Jesus is a significant event in the New Testament, recorded in all four Gospels: Matthew 27:11-26, Mark 15:1-15, Luke 23:1-25, and John 18:28-19:16.
According to the Gospels, after Jesus was arrested, he was taken before Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea, to face charges of claiming to be the King of the Jews, a charge that could be interpreted as treason against Rome.
Pilate questioned Jesus, asking him if he was indeed the King of the Jews. Jesus responded cryptically, saying, “You have said so” (Matthew 27:11), and in some versions, “You say that I am” (Mark 15:2). Pilate found no basis for a charge against Jesus and sought to release him. However, the Jewish leaders insisted that Jesus was a troublemaker who incited the people to rebellion.
Pilate learned that Jesus was from Galilee and sought to transfer the case to Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, who happened to be in Jerusalem at that time. After questioning Jesus, Herod found no basis for charges against him and sent him back to Pilate.
Pilate then offered to release Jesus as part of a customary Passover amnesty, but the crowd, incited by the Jewish leaders, demanded the release of Barabbas, a notorious prisoner, instead of Jesus. Pilate asked what he should do with Jesus, and the crowd shouted, “Crucify him!” (Mark 15:13-14).
Pilate, wanting to appease the crowd and avoid a riot, reluctantly handed Jesus over to be crucified, even though he believed Jesus to be innocent. Before doing so, he symbolically washed his hands to indicate that he was innocent of Jesus’ blood, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood; it is your responsibility” (Matthew 27:24).
Jesus was then sentenced to death by crucifixion, fulfilling the prophecy and ultimately leading to his crucifixion at Golgotha. This event is central to Christian theology, as it is seen as the fulfillment of God’s plan for the redemption of humanity through Jesus’ sacrificial death and resurrection.
