The story of Peter’s miraculous escape from prison is found in the New Testament, in the book of Acts, chapter 12, verses 1-19.

King Herod Agrippa I, seeking to persecute the early Christian church, had James, the brother of John, killed with the sword. Seeing that this pleased the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter as well with the intent of executing him after the Passover.

Peter was thus imprisoned and placed under heavy guard, with four squads of soldiers assigned to watch over him. But the night before his scheduled trial, while Peter was sleeping between two soldiers and bound with two chains, an angel of the Lord appeared in the prison cell. The angel struck Peter on the side and woke him up, instructing him to quickly get dressed and follow him.

Guided by the angel, Peter followed, thinking it was a vision. They passed the first and second guards unnoticed and reached the iron gate that led to the city. The gate opened by itself, allowing them to pass through. Once they were outside, the angel departed, and Peter realized that the Lord had truly sent his angel to rescue him.

Peter then went to the house of Mary, the mother of John Mark, where many believers had gathered for prayer. When he knocked on the outer entrance, a servant girl named Rhoda recognized his voice but was so overjoyed that she forgot to open the door. Instead, she ran back to tell the others that Peter was at the door.

The believers initially found it hard to believe Rhoda’s report, thinking she was out of her mind. But when Peter continued to knock, they finally opened the door and were amazed to see him. Peter quickly motioned for them to be quiet and told them how the Lord had brought him out of prison. He then instructed them to inform James and the other brothers of his deliverance before leaving to find a safe place.

This miraculous escape from prison highlighted the power of God and demonstrated his faithfulness in delivering his servants from persecution. It also served as a testimony to the early Christian community of God’s sovereignty and protection over those who remained faithful to him.
