The story of Peter visiting Cornelius is found in the New Testament of the Bible, in the Book of Acts, chapter 10.
Cornelius, a Roman centurion stationed in Caesarea, was described as a devout and God-fearing man, along with his entire household. He was known for his acts of charity and his prayers to God.
One day, Cornelius had a vision in which an angel of God appeared to him and instructed him to send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon Peter, who was staying with Simon the tanner by the sea.
Meanwhile, Peter also had a vision while praying on the rooftop of Simon the tanner’s house in Joppa. In his vision, a large sheet came down from heaven containing all kinds of animals, both clean and unclean according to Jewish dietary laws. A voice told Peter to kill and eat, but Peter objected, stating that he had never eaten anything impure. The voice responded, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.”
As Cornelius’ messengers arrived in Joppa, Peter was still pondering the meaning of his vision. The Spirit instructed him to go with the men, without hesitation. Peter traveled to Caesarea with them, accompanied by some of the believers from Joppa.
When Peter arrived at Cornelius’ house, he found a large gathering of people eagerly waiting to hear him. Peter began to preach the Gospel to them, emphasizing that God shows no favoritism and that salvation is available to all who believe in Jesus Christ.
While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit came upon all who heard the message, just as it had come upon the Jewish believers at Pentecost. This astonished the Jewish believers who had accompanied Peter, as they witnessed that the Gentiles also received the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Recognizing that God had accepted the Gentiles, Peter ordered that Cornelius and his household be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.
This event marked a significant turning point in the early Christian church, as it demonstrated that the Gospel was meant for people of all nations, not just the Jews. It opened the door for the inclusion of Gentiles into the Christian community without the need for them to first convert to Judaism.
