Jesus compares the work of the Spirit to the wind – its effects can be seen, but its path is unpredictable. This highlights the mysterious and sovereign nature of God’s work in spiritual rebirth.
Nicodemus is still confused, prompting Jesus to express surprise that a teacher of Israel does not understand these things. Jesus speaks of earthly and heavenly things and testifies to what he has seen and heard, yet notes that people have not accepted his testimony.
This story includes one of the most famous verses in the Bible, John 3:16, where Jesus explains God’s love and the purpose of his coming to the world: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
The conversation ends with Jesus explaining that those who believe in him are not condemned, but those who do not believe stand condemned already. He contrasts those who love light and truth, who come to Jesus, with those who love darkness and evil, who reject him.
