God instructed Moses and Aaron to go before Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt, and demand the release of the Israelites, who were enslaved under harsh conditions. God warned Moses that Pharaoh would be stubborn and refuse to let the people go, but He promised to display His power through signs and wonders.

Moses and Aaron approached Pharaoh with God’s message: “Let my people go, so that they may worship me.” But as God had foretold, Pharaoh was defiant and refused. To prove that their message was from God, Aaron threw down his staff before Pharaoh, and it miraculously turned into a serpent.

Pharaoh summoned his own magicians and wise men, who used their secret arts to replicate the miracle. They too turned their staffs into serpents. However, Aaron’s staff (now a serpent) swallowed up the staffs of the magicians, symbolizing God’s superiority over the Egyptian gods and powers.

Despite the demonstration of power, Pharaoh’s heart remained hardened, and he refused to let the Israelites go. This led to a series of ten plagues, each more devastating than the last, that God brought upon Egypt to persuade Pharaoh.

– The Nile River, the lifeblood of Egypt, was turned into blood, killing the fish and making the water undrinkable.

– A plague of frogs invaded Egypt, covering the land and entering homes, disrupting daily life.

– Dust turned into gnats, which swarmed over people and animals, causing great discomfort.

– Swarms of flies filled the land, sparing only the region of Goshen, where the Israelites lived.

– A deadly plague struck the Egyptian livestock, but the Israelites’ animals were unharmed.

– Painful boils afflicted the Egyptians, including the magicians, who were unable to stand before Moses because of their sores.

– A devastating hailstorm, accompanied by fire, destroyed crops and livestock in the fields.

– Swarms of locusts consumed whatever crops remained after the hail, leaving Egypt in famine.

– A thick darkness covered Egypt for three days, but the Israelites had light in their dwellings.

– The final and most severe plague was the death of all firstborn sons in Egypt, from Pharaoh’s household to the lowest servant. The Israelites were spared by marking their doorposts with lamb’s blood, a sign for the angel of death to pass over their homes.

After the death of the firstborn, Pharaoh finally relented and allowed the Israelites to leave Egypt. However, his change of heart was short-lived, and he pursued them with his army, leading to the dramatic crossing of the Red Sea, where God parted the waters for the Israelites and closed them upon Pharaoh’s pursuing forces.

This story underscores the power of God over all earthly rulers and forces, the futility of resisting His will, and His ability to deliver His people from bondage. It also marks the beginning of the journey of the Israelites toward the Promised Land and the establishment of the Passover, a key Jewish tradition commemorating their deliverance from Egypt.
