Joseph was the 11th son of Jacob and his favorite, the son of his old age, and he was given a richly ornamented robe, often referred to as the “coat of many colors.” This special coat made his ten older brothers jealous and resentful.
Joseph had two dreams that he shared with his family. In the first dream, he and his brothers were binding sheaves of grain in the field, and his sheaf rose and stood upright while his brothers’ sheaves gathered around and bowed down to his sheaf. In the second dream, the sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed down to him. These dreams further fueled his brothers’ animosity, as they interpreted them to mean that Joseph would rule over them.
His brothers’ jealousy grew, and one day, while tending the flocks, Joseph was sent by his father to check on them. When they saw him coming in his coat, they plotted to kill him. Reuben, the oldest, intervened and suggested they throw him into a pit instead. They stripped him of his coat and threw him into a dry pit.
