The story of Joseph being put in charge is found in the Book of Genesis in the Bible. Joseph, the son of Jacob, was sold into slavery by his brothers and taken to Egypt, where he was bought by Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard.
Despite being a slave, Joseph found favor with Potiphar, who soon put him in charge of his household and entrusted him with all his affairs (Genesis 39:1-6).
Joseph’s integrity and good looks drew the attention of Potiphar’s wife, who tried to seduce him. When Joseph refused her advances, she falsely accused him of attempting to rape her (Genesis 39:7-18).
Potiphar, angry and believing his wife’s false accusation, had Joseph thrown into prison, where he was placed in the custody of the captain of the guard (Genesis 39:19-23).
While in prison, Joseph interpreted the dreams of Pharaoh’s chief cupbearer and chief baker, who were also imprisoned. Joseph’s interpretations came true, with the chief cupbearer being restored to his position and the chief baker being executed, just as Joseph had foretold (Genesis 40:1-23).
Two years later, Pharaoh himself had two troubling dreams that none of his wise men could interpret. The chief cupbearer remembered Joseph and told Pharaoh about him (Genesis 41:1-13).
Pharaoh sent for Joseph, who was quickly brought out of prison, cleaned up, and brought before Pharaoh to interpret his dreams (Genesis 41:14-16).
God gave Joseph the ability to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams, revealing that there would be seven years of abundance followed by seven years of famine. Joseph advised Pharaoh to appoint a wise and discerning man to oversee the storage and management of grain during the years of plenty to prepare for the coming famine (Genesis 41:25-36).
Impressed by Joseph’s wisdom, Pharaoh recognized that the Spirit of God was in him and put him in charge of all of Egypt, second only to Pharaoh himself (Genesis 41:37-45).
Joseph oversaw the gathering and storage of grain during the years of abundance, and when the famine came, he was well-prepared to distribute food to the people of Egypt and to the surrounding nations (Genesis 41:46-57).
Through God’s providence and Joseph’s faithfulness, he rose from being a slave and a prisoner to become the second most powerful man in Egypt, ultimately saving many lives during the time of famine.
