While Jonah was at sea, God sent a powerful storm that threatened to sink the ship. Inside the belly of the great fish, Jonah prayed to God, expressing his repentance and acknowledging God’s sovereignty. He promised to fulfill his vow to God and go to Nineveh if he were delivered from his predicament.
God heard Jonah’s prayer and caused the great fish to vomit Jonah onto dry land, thus sparing his life.
Jonah, now willing to obey God’s command, traveled to Nineveh and delivered the message of impending judgment. To his surprise, the people of Nineveh heeded his warning, repented of their sins, and sought God’s forgiveness.
In response to Nineveh’s repentance, God showed mercy and compassion. He decided not to bring the calamity upon the city that He had originally threatened.
