The story of Jesus ascending into heaven is recounted in the New Testament in the book of Acts, specifically Acts 1:9-11.
After his resurrection, Jesus appears to his disciples over a period of forty days, teaching them about the kingdom of God. On the fortieth day, he leads them out to the vicinity of Bethany, near Jerusalem. There, he blesses them and tells them to stay in Jerusalem until they receive the Holy Spirit, as promised by the Father.
As they are gathered together, Jesus begins to ascend into heaven before their eyes. They watch as he is taken up, and a cloud hides him from their sight. While they are gazing up into the sky, two men dressed in white suddenly appear beside them. They identify themselves as angels and say to the disciples, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”
The ascension of Jesus marks the end of his earthly ministry and the beginning of his reign at the right hand of God in heaven. It fulfills his promise to send the Holy Spirit and empowers his disciples to carry out his mission of spreading the gospel to all nations. The disciples return to Jerusalem with great joy, waiting for the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise to send the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
The ascension also serves as a reminder of Jesus’ ongoing presence with his followers, even though he is no longer physically present on earth. It assures believers of his authority and sovereignty over all things, as well as his eventual return in glory.
