The story of jesus and zacchaeus – यीशु और जक्कई की कहानी

The story of Jesus and Zacchaeus is found in the Gospel of Luke in the New Testament of the Bible, specifically in Luke 19:1-10. Zacchaeus was a chief tax collector and wealthy man in the city of Jericho. Tax collectors in biblical times were often viewed with disdain because they were perceived as collaborators with the Roman oppressors and were known for their corrupt practices. Zacchaeus, being short in stature, climbed a sycamore-fig tree to get a better view of Jesus, who was passing through Jericho.

Eager to see Jesus, Zacchaeus climbs the tree to overcome the obstacle of the crowd. His curiosity about Jesus suggests a genuine interest in who Jesus is.

As Jesus passes by, he looks up and sees Zacchaeus in the tree. Jesus calls him by name, saying, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.”

Zacchaeus joyfully comes down and welcomes Jesus into his home. The crowd grumbles, expressing disapproval that Jesus would associate with a tax collector.

In response to Jesus’ presence, Zacchaeus is moved to make significant changes in his life. He declares that he will give half of his possessions to the poor and, if he has cheated anyone, he will pay them back four times the amount.

Jesus responds to Zacchaeus’ repentance and generosity by saying, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

Jesus intentionally seeks out those who are marginalized or considered sinners. In this case, he reaches out to a tax collector, showing that salvation is available to all.

Zacchaeus’ response reflects genuine repentance and a desire for a changed life. He demonstrates his commitment to righteousness through both restitution and generosity.

Jesus’ statement emphasizes his mission to seek and save the lost. Zacchaeus, despite his status as a tax collector, is recognized as a “son of Abraham” and worthy of salvation.

This encounter between Jesus and Zacchaeus highlights the transformative power of encountering Jesus and the radical nature of repentance and discipleship.
