The story of jesus and lazarus – यीशु और लाजर की कहानी
The story of Jesus and Lazarus is a powerful and deeply moving narrative found in the Christian New Testament, specifically in the Gospel of John, chapter 11. This story is significant for its demonstration of Jesus’ power over death and his deep compassion.
Lazarus, who lived in Bethany with his sisters Mary and Martha, was ill. His sisters sent a message to Jesus, saying, “Lord, the one you love is sick.” Despite hearing this, Jesus stayed where he was for two more days.
After the delay, Jesus told his disciples that they would go back to Judea. His disciples were concerned about returning due to the previous threats against Jesus’ life. Jesus then explained that Lazarus had fallen asleep (a metaphor for death) and that He was going to awaken him.
By the time Jesus arrived in Bethany, Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days. Many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them. Martha, upon hearing of Jesus’ arrival, went to meet Him while Mary stayed at home.
Martha expressed her faith in Jesus, saying that if He had been there, her brother would not have died, but she also believed that God would grant whatever Jesus asked.
Jesus told Martha, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.”
Mary also went to Jesus, weeping, and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” Jesus was deeply moved by her weeping and the mourning of others.
This leads to the shortest and one of the most poignant verses in the Bible: “Jesus wept.” His deep compassion and empathy for the suffering of others are evident here.
At the tomb, Jesus asked for the stone to be removed. Martha warned about the possible stench since Lazarus had been dead for four days. Jesus reminded her of the importance of belief in seeing the glory of God.
Jesus prayed to the Father and then called Lazarus out of the tomb. Lazarus came out, still wrapped in burial cloths, and Jesus instructed the people to take off the grave clothes and let him go.
The story of Jesus and Lazarus is not only a testament to Jesus’ divine power but also highlights several important themes such as the victory over death, the importance of faith, and the deep, personal love Jesus had for his friends. It is a story that continues to inspire and comfort many with its message of hope and the affirmation of life beyond death.
