The story of “Handwriting on the Wall” is a biblical tale from the Book of Daniel, Chapter 5. It recounts the events during the reign of King Belshazzar of Babylon.

During a grand feast held by King Belshazzar of Babylon, he and his nobles, wives, and concubines used the sacred gold and silver vessels taken from the Temple in Jerusalem. They drank wine from these vessels and praised the gods of gold, silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone.

Suddenly, fingers of a human hand appeared and began writing on the plaster of the palace wall, near the lampstand. The king watched the hand as it wrote. His face turned pale, and he was so frightened that his legs became weak and his knees were knocking.

Belshazzar called for his enchanters, astrologers, and diviners to interpret the writing. He promised that whoever could read the writing and explain its meaning would be clothed in purple, have a gold chain placed around their neck, and be made the third highest ruler in the kingdom. However, none of the king’s wise men could read the writing or tell him what it meant.

The queen, hearing the commotion, entered the banquet hall and told Belshazzar about Daniel, a man who had the spirit of the holy gods and had been found to have insight, intelligence, and wisdom like that of the gods. During the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Daniel was appointed chief of the magicians, enchanters, astrologers, and diviners. She advised the king to call for Daniel.

Daniel was brought before the king, who offered him the rewards if he could interpret the writing. Daniel declined the gifts but agreed to read the writing and interpret it. He reminded Belshazzar of how Nebuchadnezzar’s heart had become arrogant and hardened with pride, leading to his downfall until he acknowledged that the Most High God is sovereign over the kingdoms of men.

Daniel explained that Belshazzar had not humbled himself, even though he knew all this. Instead, he had set himself up against the Lord of heaven by using the vessels from His Temple and praising false gods. Therefore, the hand was sent from God, and the inscription read: “MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN.”

Daniel interpreted the inscription:
– MENE: God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end.
– TEKEL: You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting.
– PARSIN: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.

That very night, Belshazzar, the king of the Babylonians, was slain, and Darius the Mede took over the kingdom.

This story serves as a powerful reminder of divine judgment and the consequences of arrogance and sacrilege.
