Abraham obeyed God’s call and set out on a journey with his wife Sarai (later renamed Sarah), his nephew Lot, and their household. They traveled through the land of Canaan until they reached Shechem. There, God appeared to Abram and reiterated his promise, saying, “To your offspring, I will give this land.”
However, despite God’s promise, Abram and Sarai were childless and getting old. Sarai suggested that Abram take her maidservant, Hagar, as a concubine to bear children for them. Abram agreed, and Hagar bore him a son named Ishmael.
Thirteen years later, when Abram was 99 years old, God appeared to him again and renewed his covenant, promising that Abram would become the father of many nations and that his descendants would inherit the land of Canaan. God also changed Abram’s name to Abraham, meaning “father of many nations,” and Sarai’s name to Sarah, meaning “princess.”
God also promised that Sarah would bear a son, even though she was well past childbearing age. Initially, Sarah laughed at the idea, but God assured Abraham that nothing is impossible for Him.
True to His word, Sarah became pregnant and gave birth to a son, whom they named Isaac. Isaac was the child of promise, and through him, God’s covenant with Abraham was fulfilled.
