The story of God’s covenant with Abraham is a pivotal event in the Bible and is found in the Book of Genesis, specifically in chapters 12, 15, and 17.
God called Abram (later renamed Abraham) to leave his homeland, his relatives, and his father’s household and go to the land that God would show him. In return, God promised to make Abram into a great nation, bless him, make his name great, and bless all peoples on earth through him.
Despite Abram and his wife Sarai (later renamed Sarah) being elderly and childless, God promised Abram that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars in the sky and that they would inherit the land of Canaan.
In Genesis 15, God reaffirmed his covenant with Abram through a ceremony involving the sacrifice of animals. God instructed Abram to bring several animals, which he then cut in half and arranged into two rows. As Abram fell into a deep sleep, God appeared in a vision and passed between the halves of the animals, symbolizing the solemnity and permanence of the covenant.
Due to Sarah’s inability to conceive, she suggested that Abram have a child with her Egyptian maidservant, Hagar. Ishmael was born as a result of this arrangement, but he was not the child of the covenant.
In Genesis 17, when Abram was ninety-nine years old, God appeared to him again and reaffirmed the covenant, changing his name to Abraham, meaning “father of many nations.” God also changed Sarai’s name to Sarah and promised that she would bear a son, Isaac, through whom the covenant would be established.
As a sign of the covenant, God commanded Abraham and all males in his household to be circumcised. This physical mark served as a reminder of their commitment to God and their participation in the covenant.
The covenant with Abraham is foundational to the biblical narrative and plays a crucial role in the history of salvation, as it establishes God’s special relationship with the people of Israel and lays the groundwork for the fulfillment of God’s promises through the coming of Jesus Christ.
