The story of eli and his sons – एली और उसके बेटों की कहानी
The story of Eli and his sons is found in the Bible in the Books of 1 Samuel, primarily in chapters 2 and 4.
Eli was a high priest of Israel who served at the tabernacle in Shiloh. He had two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, who also served as priests.
Hophni and Phinehas were corrupt and wicked. They abused their priestly duties by taking more than their share of the sacrifices brought by the people and engaging in immoral behavior, including sleeping with women who served at the entrance of the tabernacle.
Although Eli was aware of his sons’ sinful behavior, he failed to restrain or discipline them effectively. Instead of taking decisive action to correct their behavior, he merely rebuked them verbally.
God sent a man of God to Eli with a message of judgment against his household. The man prophesied that because Eli honored his sons above God by allowing their sinful behavior to continue unchecked, his descendants would be cut off from serving as priests.
In a battle against the Philistines, Hophni and Phinehas were killed, and the Ark of the Covenant was captured. Upon hearing this news, Eli, who was elderly and blind, fell backward off his chair, broke his neck, and died.
With the deaths of his sons and Eli, the priesthood passed from Eli’s line to another priest named Samuel, whom God had chosen to be the next leader of Israel. Samuel later became a prophet, judge, and spiritual leader of Israel.
The story of Eli and his sons serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of parental neglect, the consequences of disobedience to God, and the importance of upholding moral integrity, especially for those in positions of authority and leadership.
Despite Eli’s shortcomings as a father and priest, his story also demonstrates God’s sovereignty and His ability to work through flawed individuals to accomplish His purposes in the world.
