Ham, one of Noah’s sons, saw his father naked in the tent. Instead of covering Noah discreetly or respecting his father’s condition, Ham went outside and told his brothers, Shem and Japheth.
Shem and Japheth, in a gesture of respect for their father, took a garment, walked backward into the tent, and covered Noah without looking at his nakedness.
When Noah awoke and learned about what had happened, he pronounced a curse on Ham’s son, Canaan, declaring that he would be a servant to his brothers.
