The story of “David doesn’t get even” – “डेविड डोंट गेट इवन” की कहानी

The story of “David Doesn’t Get Even” is a significant narrative from the Bible, illustrating David’s restraint and respect for God’s anointed, even in the face of personal danger and provocation. This story is found in 1 Samuel 24 and 26. Here’s a detailed account:

David, who had been anointed by the prophet Samuel to be the next king of Israel, was being pursued by King Saul. Saul was jealous and saw David as a threat to his throne, even though David had been a loyal servant.

While Saul was pursuing David, he entered a cave to relieve himself, not knowing that David and his men were hiding deeper inside the same cave. David’s men saw this as a God-given chance to kill Saul and urged David to do so. However, David crept up and secretly cut off a corner of Saul’s robe instead. Afterward, David felt guilty for even cutting Saul’s robe. He restrained his men and prevented them from attacking Saul, emphasizing that Saul was the Lord’s anointed king. When Saul left the cave, David followed him at a safe distance and revealed what he had done, showing the piece of Saul’s robe to prove that he had spared his life. David pleaded his loyalty and questioned why Saul was pursuing him. Saul was moved by David’s words and wept, acknowledging David’s righteousness and declaring that David would indeed be king. He asked David to swear that he would not destroy Saul’s descendants, which David promised.

On another occasion, Saul was pursuing David and camped on the hill of Hachilah. David and Abishai sneaked into Saul’s camp at night and found Saul sleeping, with his spear stuck in the ground next to his head. Abishai saw this as another opportunity to kill Saul and offered to do it himself, but David refused. He reiterated that it was not his place to harm the Lord’s anointed. Instead of killing Saul, David took Saul’s spear and water jug as evidence that he had been close enough to kill him but chose not to. From a safe distance, David called out to Saul’s army, chastising Abner, Saul’s commander, for not protecting the king. He then revealed the items he had taken and again showed that he meant Saul no harm. Saul recognized his own sin and acknowledged David’s righteousness once more. He blessed David and predicted his success.

David’s refusal to harm Saul highlights his deep respect for God’s authority and the anointed king, even when Saul was unjust and hostile towards him. David’s actions demonstrate his trust in God’s timing and justice, choosing not to take matters into his own hands. David’s restraint and ethical behavior under pressure serve as a powerful example of integrity and righteousness.

These stories underscore the importance of mercy, patience, and faith in God’s plan, even in the face of adversity and when tempted by easy opportunities for retribution. David’s decision not to get even with Saul showcases his moral strength and dedication to doing what is right in the eyes of God.
