The story of david and mephibosheth – दाऊद और मपीबोशेत की कहानी
The story of David and Mephibosheth is found in the Old Testament book of 2 Samuel, chapters 9 and 16.
Mephibosheth was the son of Jonathan, who was King Saul’s son and David’s close friend. After the deaths of Saul and Jonathan, David became the king of Israel. During the political upheaval that followed, Mephibosheth, who was just five years old at the time, became crippled in both feet due to an accident.
Years later, after consolidating his reign, David sought to show kindness to any surviving members of Saul’s family for the sake of his friendship with Jonathan. David asked if there was anyone left of Saul’s household to whom he could show kindness for Jonathan’s sake.
Ziba, a servant of Saul’s household, informed David about Mephibosheth, who was living in a place called Lo-debar under the care of a man named Machir. David then summoned Mephibosheth to appear before him.
When Mephibosheth came before David, he fell on his face and paid homage to the king. David reassured Mephibosheth, telling him not to fear and informing him that he would restore to him all the land that had belonged to Saul, and that Mephibosheth would always eat at his table.
Later, during Absalom’s rebellion against David, Ziba, Mephibosheth’s servant, took advantage of the situation by presenting David with provisions and claiming that Mephibosheth had betrayed him. As a result, David granted Ziba all of Mephibosheth’s possessions.
When David returned to Jerusalem after Absalom’s defeat, Mephibosheth met him and explained that Ziba had deceived him. David decided to divide the land between Ziba and Mephibosheth, but Mephibosheth insisted that Ziba should have it all since he was grateful just to see David safely return.
The story of David and Mephibosheth is often cited as an example of David’s loyalty to his covenant with Jonathan and his desire to show kindness and mercy, even to the descendants of his former enemies. It also highlights themes of restoration, forgiveness, and the importance of loyalty and integrity.
