The story of Daniel interpreting the king’s dream is found in the Book of Daniel, specifically in chapter 2. King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon had a troubling dream that none of his wise men, magicians, sorcerers, or astrologers could interpret. In his frustration, he ordered all the wise men of Babylon to be executed, including Daniel and his friends.
When Daniel learned about the king’s decree, he requested time to interpret the dream. Daniel then sought God’s mercy and wisdom through prayer, along with his friends Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.
During the night, God revealed the dream and its interpretation to Daniel in a vision. Daniel praised God for His wisdom and answered prayer. He then went to Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard, and asked for an audience with the king.
Daniel appeared before King Nebuchadnezzar and told him that no human could reveal the dream’s meaning, but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries. Daniel then described the king’s dream, which involved a large statue made of various metals.
The head of the statue was made of fine gold, its chest and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of bronze, its legs of iron, and its feet partly of iron and partly of clay. Then a stone, not cut by human hands, struck the statue’s feet, causing it to crumble. The stone grew into a great mountain and filled the whole earth.
Daniel explained to the king that the different parts of the statue represented different kingdoms, with Nebuchadnezzar’s Babylonian empire being the head of gold. Successive kingdoms would arise, each inferior to the one before it, until a final kingdom established by God would never be destroyed.
The king was astonished by Daniel’s interpretation, as it accurately reflected his dream. He acknowledged Daniel’s God as the true God of gods and promoted Daniel to a high position in Babylon, along with his friends.
This story demonstrates Daniel’s faithfulness to God, his reliance on prayer and divine revelation, and God’s sovereignty over the kingdoms of the world. It also showcases Daniel’s wisdom and his willingness to serve God even in the face of adversity.
