The devil takes Jesus to the pinnacle of the temple in Jerusalem and tempts him to throw himself down, quoting Scripture and suggesting that angels will save him. Jesus again responds with Scripture, saying, “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.”
The devil shows Jesus all the kingdoms of the world and offers them to him if Jesus will worship him. Jesus rebukes the devil, saying, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.'”
After these temptations, the devil leaves Jesus, and angels come and minister to him.
Through this experience, Jesus demonstrates his victory over temptation and his complete reliance on God and his Word. He emerges from the wilderness strengthened and ready to begin his public ministry.
