The story of Abraham’s departure for Canaan is a pivotal narrative in the Bible, particularly in the book of Genesis. It marks the beginning of Abraham’s journey as a central figure in biblical history. 

Abram, later known as Abraham, lived in the city of Ur in Mesopotamia. God called him to leave his homeland, his relatives, and his father’s household.

In Genesis 12:1-3, God made a significant promise to Abram. God promised to make Abram into a great nation. He assured Abram that He would bless him and make his name great. God promised to bless those who blessed Abram and curse those who cursed him. Through Abram, all the families of the earth would be blessed.

Abram, along with his wife Sarai (later known as Sarah) and his nephew Lot, obeyed God’s call and departed from Ur, heading to the land of Canaan.

Abram journeyed through various places in Canaan until he reached Shechem. There, God appeared to Abram and reiterated the promise of giving the land to his descendants.

Due to a famine in the land, Abram and his family temporarily sojourned in Egypt. Fearful for his life, Abram asked Sarai to pose as his sister (which she was also), fearing that the Egyptians might kill him to take his wife.

After their time in Egypt, Abram and Sarai returned to Canaan, along with Lot.

As their flocks and herds increased, strife arose between the herdsmen of Abram and Lot. To maintain peace, Abram gave Lot the choice of the land he wanted, and Lot chose the fertile Jordan Valley.

God reiterated His promise to Abram, saying that all the land he could see would be given to his descendants.

The departure of Abram for Canaan is foundational to the Abrahamic covenant, and it sets the stage for the unfolding narrative of God’s dealings with Abraham, his descendants, and the establishment of the people of Israel. Abraham’s journey is a testament to his faith and obedience in response to God’s call.
