When Moses descended from the mountain and saw the idolatrous worship, he became angry and shattered the stone tablets containing the Ten Commandments. Moses burned the golden calf, ground it into powder, scattered it on water, and made the Israelites drink it as a symbolic act of their sin and rebellion.
Moses then confronted Aaron, who offered excuses for his role in the incident, claiming that he had thrown the gold into the fire, and the golden calf emerged on its own. Moses called upon the people to choose sides, and the Levites, the tribe of Moses and Aaron, rallied to Moses’ side.
As a consequence of their disobedience, God sent a plague among the people, and many were struck down. However, Moses interceded on their behalf, and God relented from completely destroying them.
