The story of the birth of Jesus is one of the most well-known and central narratives in the New Testament of the Bible. It is found in the Gospels of Matthew (Chapter 1-2) and Luke (Chapter 2).
According to the Gospel accounts, Jesus was born during the reign of King Herod the Great in Bethlehem, a town in Judea. His parents were Mary and Joseph, who were both devout Jews. Mary was a young virgin who was engaged to Joseph when she received a visit from the angel Gabriel.
The angel announced to Mary that she would conceive a child by the Holy Spirit and that her son would be the long-awaited Messiah, the Savior of the world. Mary, accepting God’s plan, became pregnant by the Holy Spirit.
At that time, the Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken. Joseph, being of the lineage of David, had to travel from his hometown of Nazareth to Bethlehem to be registered. Mary accompanied him on the journey, even though she was close to giving birth.
When they arrived in Bethlehem, finding no place to stay, Joseph and Mary were forced to take shelter in a stable or a manger. It was there, in humble surroundings, that Mary gave birth to Jesus. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, as there was no crib available.
Meanwhile, in the fields nearby, shepherds were tending their flocks. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared to them, announcing the birth of Jesus and proclaiming peace and goodwill. The shepherds hurried to Bethlehem and found the baby lying in the manger, just as the angel had told them.
Soon after, wise men from the East, known as the Magi or the Three Wise Men, saw a star that signified the birth of a king. They followed the star to Bethlehem, where they presented gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the newborn Jesus.
The story of the birth of Jesus is significant for Christians as it represents the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies and the arrival of the Messiah. It is celebrated every year on Christmas, which is considered one of the most important holidays in the Christian calendar.
