The story begins with the Israelites’ escape from Egypt under the leadership of Moses. After the ten plagues and the Passover, Pharaoh allowed the Israelites to leave Egypt.
The Israelites journeyed toward the Promised Land but soon found themselves trapped between the pursuing Egyptian army and the Red Sea. In a miraculous event, God parted the waters of the Red Sea, allowing the Israelites to cross on dry land. When the pursuing Egyptians followed, the waters closed in, drowning them.
After crossing the Red Sea, the Israelites entered the wilderness on their way to the land God had promised them. Their journey was filled with challenges, including scarcity of food and water.
As the Israelites traveled further into the wilderness, they came to a place called Marah. There, they found water, but it was bitter and undrinkable. The people grumbled against Moses, questioning why they had been brought into the wilderness to die of thirst.
In response to the people’s complaints, Moses cried out to the Lord for help. God instructed Moses to throw a piece of wood into the bitter water. When he did, the water miraculously became sweet and drinkable.
After this event, God made a promise to the Israelites. He said, “If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you” (Exodus 15:26, NIV).
With their thirst quenched, the Israelites continued their journey through the wilderness, guided by God’s presence in the form of a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.
