Story of sodom and gomorrah destroyed – सदोम और अमोरा के नष्ट होने की कहानी

The story of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah is a well-known account from the Old Testament of the Bible, found primarily in the Book of Genesis, chapters 18 and 19. It recounts the judgment and destruction of two sinful cities by God.

The story begins with a description of the wickedness and sinfulness of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, located in the plain of the Jordan River.

God, who had made a covenant with Abraham, decided to inform him of His plans to judge these cities. He visited Abraham in the form of three angels. Abraham, recognizing the divine visitors, showed them hospitality and offered them food and drink.

God revealed to Abraham that He intended to investigate the cities for their great wickedness and decide whether to bring judgment upon them. Abraham, out of concern for his nephew Lot, who lived in Sodom, interceded on behalf of the cities. He asked God if He would spare the cities if a certain number of righteous people were found within them. God agreed to spare the cities for the sake of the righteous.

The angels continued on their way to Sodom to investigate the city’s sinfulness. They entered Sodom and were hosted by Lot, who offered them hospitality and shelter in his home.

That evening, the men of Sodom surrounded Lot’s house and demanded that he bring out the male guests (the angels) so that they could engage in immoral and sinful acts with them. This demonstrated the extreme wickedness of the city.

The angels struck the wicked men of Sodom with blindness to protect Lot and his family. They then warned Lot to flee the city with his family because God had determined to destroy it.

The next morning, as Lot and his family were fleeing, God rained down fire and brimstone (sulfur) upon Sodom and Gomorrah, utterly destroying both cities. The destruction was so complete that the cities and their inhabitants were reduced to ashes.

As Lot and his family fled, they were instructed not to look back at the city. Lot’s wife disobeyed and turned to look, and as a consequence, she turned into a pillar of salt.

Lot and his two daughters survived and found refuge in a cave in the mountains.

The story of Sodom and Gomorrah is often cited in religious and moral discussions as an example of God’s judgment on wickedness and immorality. It also serves as a warning against sinful behavior. It has been interpreted in various ways by different religious traditions and has influenced cultural and literary works throughout history.
