Story of revenge against shechem – शकेम से बदला लेने की कहानी

The story of revenge against Shechem is found in the Book of Genesis, specifically in Genesis 34.  Dinah, the daughter of Jacob and Leah, went out to visit the daughters of the land. Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, saw her, took her, and lay with her. Although Shechem desired to marry Dinah, he acted without the consent of Dinah’s family.

When Jacob’s sons heard what had happened, they were greatly distressed and angry because of the dishonor brought upon their sister. Hamor, Shechem’s father, went to Jacob to seek permission for the marriage, proposing that their two families intermarry and form alliances. Shechem himself expressed a strong desire to marry Dinah.

Jacob’s sons, however, were deceitful. They agreed to the proposal but with a condition: all the men of Shechem’s city must be circumcised. Shechem and his father convinced the men of their city to undergo circumcision, thinking it would lead to the union.

While the men were still in pain from the circumcision, two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, entered the city and killed all the men. They rescued Dinah from Shechem’s house and took her back to their family.

Jacob, concerned about the potential repercussions of their actions, reprimanded Simeon and Levi for bringing trouble upon them. They responded by defending the honor of their sister, stating that they couldn’t allow their sister to be treated like a prostitute.

This event is a tragic episode in the biblical narrative, illustrating the consequences of revenge and the complexities of familial relationships.
