Paul, a devoted apostle of Jesus Christ, found himself in a dangerous situation in Jerusalem. He had been arrested by Roman soldiers after a group of Jews falsely accused him of defiling the temple. As he awaited trial, a sinister plot was forming against him.
Forty Jewish men, filled with hatred and determined to see Paul dead, made a vow to neither eat nor drink until they had killed him. They conspired with the chief priests and elders to ask the Roman commander to bring Paul before them, under the pretense of wanting more information about his case. Their plan was to ambush and kill Paul on his way to the council.
However, God’s providence intervened. Paul’s young nephew, whose name is not recorded in the Bible, overheard the plot. Without hesitation, the boy went to the barracks where Paul was being held and told him everything he had heard.
Realizing the gravity of the situation, Paul called for one of the Roman centurions. “Take this young man to the commander; he has something to tell him,” Paul instructed.
The centurion took the boy to the commander. “The prisoner Paul sent for me and asked me to bring this young man to you because he has something to tell you,” the centurion explained.
The commander took the boy aside and asked, “What is it you want to tell me?”
The boy conveyed the entire plot: “The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul before the council tomorrow, on the pretext of wanting more accurate information about him. Don’t give in to them, because more than forty of them are waiting in ambush for him. They have taken an oath not to eat or drink until they have killed him. They are ready now, waiting for your consent to their request.”
The commander listened carefully and dismissed the boy, instructing him, “Don’t tell anyone that you have reported this to me.”
Taking immediate action, the commander called for two of his centurions. “Get ready a detachment of two hundred soldiers, seventy horsemen, and two hundred spearmen to go to Caesarea at nine tonight. Provide mounts for Paul so that he may be taken safely to Governor Felix.”
The soldiers followed the commander’s orders. Under the cover of night, they escorted Paul out of Jerusalem, protecting him from the conspirators. They traveled to Caesarea, where Paul was safely delivered to Governor Felix along with a letter from the commander explaining the situation.
Through the courageous actions of his young nephew and the swift decisions of the Roman commander, Paul’s life was spared. God had once again demonstrated His faithfulness and protection over His servant, ensuring that Paul would continue his mission to spread the Gospel.
Paul’s nephew’s bravery reminds us that no act of courage is too small and that God can use anyone, regardless of age, to accomplish His purposes and protect His people.
