Joab’s Concern: Joab, the commander of David’s army, was uneasy about the king’s request. He sensed that it was not a righteous decision and cautioned David against counting the people. Joab reminded David that the people belonged to God and not to the king.
The Census: Despite Joab’s warning, David insisted on conducting the census, and Joab reluctantly obeyed the king’s command. The census was carried out throughout Israel, including the territories of Judah and Benjamin.

David was given three options for the punishment: seven years of famine, three months of fleeing from enemies, or three days of plague in the land. David chose the third option, preferring to fall into the hands of God rather than into the hands of human adversaries.
The Plague: As a result of David’s choice, a severe plague broke out in Israel, causing significant loss of life. The plague brought suffering and death to the people, leading to great distress throughout the kingdom.
David’s Repentance: Realizing the gravity of his sin and the consequences it had brought upon his people, David deeply repented. He cried out to God, acknowledging his guilt and seeking forgiveness for his prideful actions.
God’s Mercy: In response to David’s sincere repentance, God showed mercy. He instructed the angel who was executing the plague to stop, sparing Jerusalem from further devastation.
The Threshing Floor of Araunah: Following God’s instructions, David went to a place called the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. He purchased the land and built an altar there, offering sacrifices to God to seek His forgiveness and atonement for the sins of the people.
