While in Moab, Elimelech dies, leaving Naomi a widow. Her two sons, Mahlon and Chilion, marry Moabite women named Orpah and Ruth. However, both sons also pass away, leaving Naomi, Orpah, and Ruth as widows.
Hearing that the famine in Bethlehem has ended, Naomi decides to return to her homeland. She encourages her daughters-in-law, Orpah and Ruth, to return to their own families in Moab, where they might find new husbands. Orpah decides to stay in Moab, but Ruth is determined to go with Naomi and says the famous words, “Where you go, I will go; where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God”.
Naomi and Ruth arrive in Bethlehem, and their return is met with curiosity and sorrow. Naomi’s name means “pleasant,” but she tells the people to call her “Mara,” meaning “bitter,” because of her difficult circumstances.
Ruth, in an act of devotion and to provide for her and Naomi, goes to the fields to glean grain after the harvesters. She happens to glean in the fields of Boaz, a wealthy and kind relative of Naomi.
Boaz is impressed by Ruth’s loyalty to Naomi and her hard work. He extends kindness and protection to her, ensuring that she can safely glean in his fields and even instructs his workers to leave extra grain for her.
Naomi, recognizing Boaz’s significance as a close relative and the potential for his redemption, instructs Ruth to approach Boaz during the threshing floor festivities. Ruth follows Naomi’s guidance, and Boaz agrees to marry Ruth, thereby performing the role of a “kinsman-redeemer.”
Ruth and Boaz’s union leads to the birth of a son named Obed, who becomes the grandfather of King David, one of Israel’s greatest kings. Furthermore, Ruth is included in the genealogy of Jesus Christ in the New Testament, highlighting her role in the lineage of the Messiah.
