The story of Joshua, a central figure in the Hebrew Bible, is primarily told in the Book of Joshua. He was Moses’ assistant and became the leader of the Israelite tribes after Moses’ death. 

Joshua was a faithful assistant to Moses during the Exodus journey. He was one of the twelve spies sent to assess the land of Canaan and was one of only two (the other being Caleb) who trusted God’s promise to deliver the land to the Israelites.

After Moses’ death, Joshua was appointed by God to lead the Israelites into Canaan, the Promised Land. Under Joshua’s leadership, the Israelites miraculously crossed the Jordan River on dry ground. Joshua led the Israelites in the battle of Jericho, where the walls of the city fell after the Israelites marched around them for seven days as per God’s instructions.

Joshua continued to lead the Israelites in several battles to conquer the land of Canaan, as commanded by God. This included battles at Ai, Gibeon, and others, often involving miraculous interventions.

After the successful conquests, Joshua divided the land of Canaan among the twelve tribes of Israel. Towards the end of his life, Joshua gathered the tribes at Shechem and reminded them of God’s faithfulness. He urged them to serve God alone. Joshua made a famous declaration of his own faith: “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15).

Joshua died at the age of 110 and was buried in the land of Ephraim. Joshua is remembered as a faithful, courageous leader who trusted in God’s promises and led Israel to a new beginning in the Promised Land.

Joshua’s story is significant for several reasons. It marks the transition of the Israelites from a wandering people to a nation with a land of their own. It also highlights themes of faith, obedience, courage, and God’s faithfulness to His promises. Joshua is a model of leadership and commitment to God.
