The story of Joseph the Dreamer is a well-known and significant narrative from the Book of Genesis in the Old Testament of the Bible. It follows the life of Joseph, the son of Jacob (also known as Israel), and his remarkable experiences involving dreams, jealousy, betrayal, and ultimately, redemption.
Joseph’s Dreams – Joseph was one of the twelve sons of Jacob and Rachel. He was favored by his father, which led to jealousy and resentment among his brothers. Joseph had two notable dreams in the first dream, he and his brothers were binding sheaves in the field, and Joseph’s sheaf stood upright while his brothers’ sheaves bowed down to it. In the second dream, the sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed down to Joseph. These dreams were seen as a sign of Joseph’s future greatness.
Jealousy and Betrayal – Joseph’s brothers grew increasingly envious of him because of their father’s favoritism and Joseph’s dreams. The situation worsened when Jacob gave Joseph a special coat of many colors. Out of jealousy, his brothers plotted against him. One day, when Joseph was sent by Jacob to check on his brothers who were tending the flock, they seized him, threw him into a pit, and later sold him to a caravan of traders who were passing by. The traders took Joseph to Egypt, where he was sold as a slave to Potipar, an officer of Pharaoh.
Joseph’s Rise in Egypt – Despite his difficult circumstances, Joseph found favor with Potipar and rose to a position of authority within his household. However, he faced another challenge when he was falsely accused of attempting to seduce Potipar’s wife and was thrown into prison.
Interpreting Dreams in Prison – While in prison, Joseph’s ability to interpret dreams came to the forefront again. He interpreted the dreams of two fellow prisoners—Pharaoh’s cupbearer and baker. The cupbearer’s dream indicated that he would be restored to his position, while the baker’s dream suggested his impending execution. Joseph’s interpretations proved accurate.
Interpreting Pharaoh’s Dream – Years later, Pharaoh had a perplexing dream that troubled him. The cupbearer, who had been restored to his position, remembered Joseph’s skill in interpreting dreams and recommended him to Pharaoh. Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dream, which involved seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine. He advised Pharaoh to store grain during the years of plenty to prepare for the famine.
Reunion and Redemption – Impressed by Joseph’s wisdom, Pharaoh appointed him as a high-ranking official in Egypt, responsible for managing the grain stores. During the famine, Joseph’s brothers came to Egypt seeking food. Unaware of Joseph’s identity, they bowed before him, fulfilling the symbolism of his dreams. Joseph eventually revealed his identity to his brothers and forgave them for their past actions. He invited his entire family, including his father Jacob, to settle in Egypt to escape the famine.
