Jesus then began to wash the feet of His disciples, one by one. This act was particularly significant because in the culture of the time, washing feet was a menial task reserved for servants and considered a gesture of great humility.

When Jesus approached Simon Peter to wash his feet, Peter was taken aback and initially refused, saying, “You shall never wash my feet.” Peter may have felt that it was inappropriate for Jesus, their Lord and Teacher, to perform such a task.

In response to Peter’s resistance, Jesus explained the symbolic meaning of His actions. He told Peter that unless He washed his feet, Peter would have no part with Him. Peter then asked Jesus to wash not only his feet but also his hands and head.

Jesus explained that those who had already bathed needed only to have their feet washed, symbolizing that they were clean, but not all of them. He was alluding to the need for spiritual cleansing and the forgiveness of sins, emphasizing the importance of being in a right relationship with Him.

After washing the disciples’ feet, Jesus asked them if they understood what He had done. He told them that He, their Lord and Teacher, had set an example for them to follow, and He encouraged them to serve one another in humility.

Jesus concluded by saying, “I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.”
