As Jesus traveled through the region of the Decapolis, a Gentile area near the Sea of Galilee, some people brought to Him a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment. They begged Jesus to lay His hands on him and heal him.

Jesus took the man aside from the crowd, away from distractions, and then He put His fingers into the man’s ears. After spitting and touching the man’s tongue, Jesus looked up to heaven, sighed deeply, and said to him, “Ephphatha,” which means “Be opened.”

Instantly, the man’s ears were opened, and his tongue was loosened, allowing him to hear and speak clearly. The people were amazed and marveled at this miraculous healing. They exclaimed, “He has done everything well; he even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak!”

This miracle demonstrates Jesus’ compassion and power to heal those who suffer from physical ailments. It also reveals His authority over creation and His ability to restore wholeness to individuals in need.
