Later in the story, Jacob and Rebekah conspired to deceive Isaac, who was near death, into bestowing the paternal blessing upon Jacob instead of Esau. This blessing included a promise of land and prosperity. Esau was furious when he discovered the deception and vowed to kill Jacob.
Fearing for his life, Jacob fled to the house of his uncle Laban in Mesopotamia. There, he married Laban’s daughters, Leah and Rachel, and worked for Laban for many years.
After a significant period, Jacob decided to return to Canaan. He was concerned about facing Esau, whom he expected to be still angry with him.
Jacob prepared a generous gift for Esau and sent it ahead as a peace offering. When the two brothers finally met, Esau forgave Jacob, and they reconciled.
During his journey, Jacob had a significant encounter with God, wrestling with a mysterious figure (sometimes interpreted as an angel or God Himself) at the Jabbok River. Jacob received a new name, Israel, which means “he who strives with God.”
Jacob, now called Israel, had twelve sons who became the progenitors of the twelve tribes of Israel. His sons included famous figures like Joseph and Benjamin.
The story of Jacob and Esau is significant in the biblical narrative because it marks the continuation of God’s covenant with Abraham and the emergence of the twelve tribes of Israel.
