King Saul, the first king of Israel, was rejected by God because of his disobedience. Saul had repeatedly failed to follow God’s commands, choosing instead to act according to his own judgment. Because of this, God sent the prophet Samuel to find a new king for Israel, one who would be a man after God’s own heart.
God instructed Samuel to go to Bethlehem, to the house of Jesse, for He had chosen one of Jesse’s sons to be the new king. Samuel was initially fearful because he knew Saul would see this as a threat to his throne. However, God assured Samuel and provided him with a plan. Samuel was to take a heifer and say he had come to Bethlehem to offer a sacrifice to the Lord.
When Samuel arrived in Bethlehem, the elders of the town were uneasy, but Samuel reassured them he came in peace to offer a sacrifice. He invited Jesse and his sons to the sacrifice. Jesse had eight sons, and he brought seven of them to Samuel.
As Samuel saw Jesse’s eldest son, Eliab, he thought surely this was the Lord’s anointed. But God said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
One by one, Jesse’s sons passed before Samuel, but each time the Lord said He had not chosen them. Samuel asked Jesse if these were all his sons. Jesse replied that his youngest son was tending the sheep.
Jesse sent for his youngest son, David. When David arrived, he was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features. The Lord told Samuel, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”
Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed David in the presence of his brothers. From that day on, the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Although David was still a young shepherd boy, God had chosen him to be the future king of Israel. David would later be known as a man after God’s own heart, fulfilling God’s purpose for Israel in ways that Saul had failed to do.
David’s anointing marked the beginning of a new chapter in Israel’s history. Though he would face many challenges and hardships before becoming king, David’s faith and reliance on God would be a cornerstone of his reign. His story reminds us that God looks beyond outward appearances and sees the true intentions of the heart, choosing those who may seem unlikely by human standards to fulfill His divine purposes.
