The story of Gideon fighting the Midianites is a well-known narrative from the Bible, specifically found in the Book of Judges, chapters 6-8. It tells the story of Gideon, a judge chosen by God to lead the Israelites in their battle against the oppressive Midianite forces.
The Israelites had a recurring cycle of turning away from God, which resulted in their oppression by foreign nations. In this case, the Midianites, along with other eastern tribes, were oppressing the Israelites. God chose Gideon to deliver the Israelites from the Midianite oppression.
Call of Gideon – The story begins with an angel of the Lord appearing to Gideon while he was threshing wheat in a winepress to hide it from the Midianites. The angel addressed Gideon as a “mighty man of valor” and told him that God had chosen him to deliver Israel from the Midianites. Gideon asked for a sign and received it when the angel consumed an offering with fire.
Tearing Down the Altar of Baal – Gideon obeyed God’s command to tear down his father’s altar to the false god Baal and cut down the Asherah pole next to it, despite fearing his family and the townspeople.
The Sign of the Fleece – Gideon sought reassurance from God and asked for a sign involving a fleece of wool. He requested that the fleece be wet with dew while the ground around it remained dry, and then vice versa. God granted both signs to Gideon.
Gideon’s Army – Gideon gathered an army of 32,000 men to face the Midianites. However, God told him that his army was too large, as the Israelites might take credit for the victory. God instructed Gideon to allow those who were fearful to leave, reducing the army to 10,000. Still, God considered this number too large and had Gideon narrow it down to just 300 men based on a unique selection process involving how the men drank water.
The Victory – Gideon divided his 300 men into three groups and provided them with trumpets, empty jars, and torches hidden inside the jars. They encircled the Midianite camp at night and, at Gideon’s signal, blew their trumpets, broke their jars, and shouted, “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!” The Midianites, in confusion and fear, turned on each other and fled. Gideon pursued them, and the Midianite leaders were captured and killed.
Gideon’s Rule – After the victory, the Israelites wanted to make Gideon their king, but he declined, emphasizing that God was their ruler. Gideon requested gold earrings from the spoils of war, which he used to create an ephod (a religious garment). However, the ephod became an object of idolatry, and Israel turned away from God again.
The story of Gideon illustrates themes of faith, obedience, and the role of a reluctant leader chosen by God. Gideon’s victory with a small, unconventional army showcases God’s power and ability to deliver the Israelites from oppression.
