The story of Elijah and Elisha is found in the Old Testament of the Bible, primarily in the Books of Kings. It recounts the relationship between the prophet Elijah and his successor, Elisha.
Elijah was a powerful prophet who lived during the reign of King Ahab of Israel. He performed many miracles and confronted King Ahab and his wife, Queen Jezebel, for leading the people of Israel into idolatry.
One of Elijah’s most famous encounters was on Mount Carmel, where he challenged the prophets of Baal to a contest to prove the superiority of the true God. After a dramatic showdown, during which God sent fire from heaven to consume Elijah’s sacrifice, the people of Israel turned back to worship the Lord.

Elisha, a young farmer, was plowing his fields when Elijah called him to follow him and become his servant. Elisha left everything behind to serve Elijah and learn from him.
Over time, Elisha witnessed many miracles performed by Elijah, including the parting of the Jordan River, the raising of the widow’s son from the dead, and the miraculous provision of oil for a poor widow.
When the time came for Elijah to be taken up to heaven, he asked Elisha what he could do for him before he departed. Elisha asked for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit, and Elijah promised that it would be granted if Elisha saw him being taken up.
As they walked and talked, a chariot of fire appeared, drawn by horses of fire, and Elijah was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind. Elisha saw it happen and cried out, “My father, my father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” He then picked up Elijah’s cloak, which had fallen, and used it to part the waters of the Jordan River, just as Elijah had done.
With Elijah gone, Elisha took up the mantle of prophethood and continued his mentor’s work, performing many miracles and faithfully serving God until the end of his life. The story of Elijah and Elisha highlights the passing of leadership from one generation to the next and the importance of mentorship in the prophetic tradition.
