As David’s initial plan failed, he resorted to a more sinister plot. He instructed Joab, his military commander, to place Uriah in a position during battle where he was sure to be killed. Uriah indeed died in battle, and David took Bathsheba as his wife.
The prophet Nathan confronted David with a parable about a rich man who took a poor man’s only lamb. David, outraged by the injustice, declared that the rich man deserved to die. Nathan then pointed out that David was that man, guilty of taking Uriah’s wife and life.
David, convicted by Nathan’s words, acknowledged his sin and repented. Nathan assured David that God had forgiven his sin, but the consequences would still follow. The child born to David and Bathsheba became ill and died, a consequence of David’s actions.
Despite the tragedy, David and Bathsheba later had another son named Solomon. God loved Solomon and, through the prophet Nathan, gave him the name Jedidiah, meaning “loved by the Lord.”
