The story of the burial of Jesus is a significant event in Christian theology and is described in the New Testament of the Bible, particularly in the Gospels of Matthew (Matthew 27:57-66), Mark (Mark 15:42-47), Luke (Luke 23:50-56), and John (John 19:38-42). It follows the crucifixion of Jesus and precedes His resurrection.

The events take place in Jerusalem, particularly at Golgotha, where Jesus was crucified, and in a nearby garden tomb. The central figure of Christianity, believed by Christians to be the Son of God and the Messiah. A wealthy and devout member of the Jewish Sanhedrin, who is described as a secret disciple of Jesus. Another member of the Jewish Sanhedrin who is known for visiting Jesus at night to inquire about His teachings. Women who followed Jesus and witnessed His crucifixion and burial.

After Jesus’ crucifixion, Joseph of Arimathea, who had not consented to Jesus’ crucifixion and was a follower of Jesus, approaches Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, and requests permission to bury Jesus’ body. Pilate grants his request.

Joseph, along with Nicodemus, takes Jesus’ body from the cross and prepares it for burial. They wrap the body in linen cloths and anoint it with spices, following Jewish burial customs.

Joseph had a new tomb carved out of rock in a nearby garden. This tomb had not been used for burial before. They place Jesus’ body in the tomb and roll a large stone to seal the entrance.

The Gospels note that Mary Magdalene and other women who had followed Jesus and witnessed His crucifixion observed the burial and took note of where Jesus had been laid.

The Jewish religious authorities, aware of Jesus’ prediction that He would rise from the dead, request that Pilate place a seal on the tomb and station guards there to prevent any tampering with the body. The burial of Jesus fulfills Old Testament prophecies, such as Isaiah 53:9, which foretold that the Messiah would be buried in a rich man’s tomb.

The burial sets the stage for the resurrection of Jesus, which is the central event of Christian faith. It marks the moment of Jesus’ transition from His crucified and earthly state to His resurrected and glorified state.

The presence of witnesses, including Joseph of Arimathea, Nicodemus, and the women, adds authenticity to the story and provides a chain of evidence for the events that followed, including the empty tomb on Easter Sunday.

The burial of Jesus is a symbol of His identification with human mortality and suffering. His resurrection, which follows, represents victory over sin and death.
