In the days when the boy Samuel was serving under Eli, the word of the Lord was rare, and visions were uncommon. One night, as Samuel lay sleeping in the temple of the Lord where the ark of God was, he heard someone call his name. Thinking it was Eli, the priest, he ran to him and said, “Here I am; you called me.” But Eli replied, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” This happened three times.
After the third time, Eli realized it was the Lord calling the boy. He instructed Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if He calls you again, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.'”
Samuel went back and lay down. The Lord called once again, “Samuel! Samuel!” This time, Samuel responded as Eli had instructed, and the Lord spoke to him. God revealed to Samuel the future of Israel and Eli’s household, giving Samuel his first prophetic message.
From that day on, Samuel became known as a prophet of the Lord, and the Lord continued to reveal Himself to him in Shiloh through His word. Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him, ensuring that none of his words fell to the ground unfulfilled.
