In ancient Israel, King Saul was ruling over the Israelites, but he had disobeyed God’s commands, and as a result, God rejected him as king. God sent the prophet Samuel to anoint a new king from the house of Jesse.
Samuel went to the town of Bethlehem, where Jesse and his sons lived. When Samuel saw Jesse’s eldest son, Eliab, he thought he would be the one chosen by God because he was tall and had an impressive appearance. However, God spoke to Samuel and said, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
One by one, Samuel saw Jesse’s other sons, but none of them were chosen by God. Finally, Samuel asked if there were any more sons, and Jesse mentioned that his youngest son, David, was out in the fields tending the sheep. Samuel requested that David be brought before him.
When David arrived, the Lord said to Samuel, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.” So, Samuel took a flask of oil and anointed David in the presence of his brothers, signifying that God had chosen him as the future king of Israel.
From that day on, the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Though he was young and least expected to be a king, David went on to become one of the most significant figures in biblical history. He defeated the giant Goliath, served as a loyal warrior and leader, and eventually became the beloved and renowned King of Israel.
The story of God choosing David as king emphasizes that God’s selection is not based on outward appearances but on the condition of the heart. David’s humility, faith, and devotion to God were qualities that made him a suitable choice to lead God’s people.
