The Israelites were once again at war with the Philistines. The two armies camped on opposite sides of the Valley of Elah. When David arrived, he heard Goliath’s challenge and saw the fear it instilled in the Israelite soldiers. Despite Goliath’s terrifying appearance, David was not afraid. He was deeply offended that Goliath defied the armies of the living God.
David spoke to King Saul, telling him that he would fight Goliath. Saul was doubtful because David was only a young shepherd, but David recounted his experiences protecting his sheep from lions and bears, declaring that the same God who delivered him from those predators would deliver him from Goliath.
Saul offered David his own armor, but David found it too cumbersome and removed it. Instead, he took his staff, chose five smooth stones from a stream, and put them in his shepherd’s bag. With his sling in hand, David approached Goliath.
Goliath saw David coming and despised him, thinking it was a joke to send a mere boy to fight him. Goliath cursed David by his gods and threatened to kill him and feed his flesh to the birds and wild animals. David responded with unwavering faith, declaring, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”
As Goliath moved closer to attack, David ran quickly towards the battle line to meet him. Reaching into his bag, David took out a stone, slung it, and struck Goliath on the forehead. The stone sank into Goliath’s forehead, and he fell face down on the ground. David ran over, stood over him, took Goliath’s sword, and cut off his head. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they turned and ran. The Israelites pursued them and won a great victory.
David’s defeat of Goliath became a turning point for the Israelites. David was celebrated as a hero, and his faith in God and his courage were recognized by all. This victory marked the beginning of David’s rise to prominence in Israel. He would eventually become the greatest king of Israel, known for his deep faith and his heart after God.
David’s fight with Goliath is a powerful story of faith, courage, and the belief that with God, even the most insurmountable challenges can be overcome.
