In the small town of Nazareth, there lived a young woman named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a carpenter by trade. Mary was a kind and humble woman, living a simple life and following the teachings of her faith.
One day, as Mary was going about her daily chores, an extraordinary event occurred that would change her life forever. The Angel Gabriel, a messenger from God, appeared before her. His presence was radiant and awe-inspiring, filling the room with a divine light.
“Greetings, favored one!” Gabriel said. “The Lord is with you.” Mary was greatly troubled and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.
“Do not be afraid, Mary,” the angel reassured her. “You have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”
Mary was astonished and confused. “How will this be,” she asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth, your relative, is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.”
Mary listened intently, her heart filled with both awe and acceptance. She responded with faith and humility, “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.
Filled with a sense of purpose and divine destiny, Mary set out to visit her relative Elizabeth, who lived in the hill country of Judea. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice, she exclaimed, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”
Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home. She pondered the angel’s message and the events that followed, treasuring them in her heart.
This visit by the angel Gabriel marked the beginning of the fulfillment of God’s promise to send a Savior into the world. Mary’s willingness to accept God’s plan with faith and obedience set the stage for the miraculous birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who would bring salvation and hope to all of humanity.
